This reintroduces the change from commit v3.10.0-rc1~69^2 (Performance:
Improve efficiency of source file lookup in cmMakefile, 2017-08-17) with
some corrections. The original was rolled back by commit
v3.10.0-rc1~52^2~1 (Revert "Performance: ...", 2017-09-25) due to
incompatibilities found. The rollback was followed-up by addition of a
test for the offending case, and this revision passes the test.
Add cache entry `CMAKE_GENERATOR_INSTANCE` to hold the instance location
persistently across re-runs of CMake in a given build tree.
For now we reject the option by default if explicitly set. It will be
implemented on a per-generator basis. Pass the setting into try_compile
project generation. Add a RunCMake.GeneratorInstance test to cover
basic use cases for the option. Verify that `CMAKE_GENERATOR_INSTANCE`
is empty by default, and that it is rejected when the generator does not
support a user setting.
Issue: #17268
We don't need to save the `CMAKE_GENERATOR_{PLATFORM,TOOLSET}` values
from the cache back into the `cmake` instance. They were used only to
propagate the settings into `cmake` instances for `try_compile`, but we
already have their values in the `cmMakefile`'s variables anyway. In
fact those variables are the ones we actually give to the generators.
A common use case of `target_compile_features` is simply to specify that
the compiler should be run in a mode that is aware of e.g. C++11. Some
projects simply specify a particular C++11-only feature to request this.
Provide a first-class way to do this by naming features after the
corresponding language standard. Record them as always available in the
corresponding standard level so that requesting them always ensures that
standard (or higher) is used.
Port dependents to the new locations as needed.
Leave behind a cmState.h include in cmListFileCache to reduce noise. It
is removed in a following commit.
Per-source copyright/license notice headers that spell out copyright holder
names and years are hard to maintain and often out-of-date or plain wrong.
Precise contributor information is already maintained automatically by the
version control tool. Ultimately it is the receiver of a file who is
responsible for determining its licensing status, and per-source notices are
merely a convenience. Therefore it is simpler and more accurate for
each source to have a generic notice of the license name and references to
more detailed information on copyright holders and full license terms.
Our `Copyright.txt` file now contains a list of Contributors whose names
appeared source-level copyright notices. It also references version control
history for more precise information. Therefore we no longer need to spell
out the list of Contributors in each source file notice.
Replace CMake per-source copyright/license notice headers with a short
description of the license and links to `Copyright.txt` and online information
available from "https://cmake.org/licensing". The online URL also handles
cases of modules being copied out of our source into other projects, so we
can drop our notices about replacing links with full license text.
Run the `Utilities/Scripts/filter-notices.bash` script to perform the majority
of the replacements mechanically. Manually fix up shebang lines and trailing
newlines in a few files. Manually update the notices in a few files that the
script does not handle.
Introduce cmake::ReportCapabilitiesJson which returns a the Json object
that is serialized in cmake::ReportCapabilities.
This allows to re-use the information in cmake-server.
This way messages can be issued independent of the cmake instance.
It is now possible to make DisplayMessage a virtual interface and
override it to handle messages in the cmake-gui or future IDE
interaction interfaces.
This will allow additional information about the availability
and capabilities of extra generators to be queried without
actually creating them.
Instead of a static NewFactory() method like the main generator
factories have, use a static GetFactory() method to get a pointer to a
statically allocated extra generator factory. This simplifies memory
management.
Even in relatively small projects using `--trace` (and `--trace-expand`)
may produce a lot of output. When developing a custom module usually
one is interested in output of only a few particular modules.
Add a `--trace-source=<file>` option to enable tracing only a subset of
source files. The final output would be only from requested modules,
ignoring anything else not matched to given filename(s).

The force parameter is ugly and makes the method harder to reason about
(issues the message ... but maybe it doesn't ... but then again you can
force it). It is a violation of
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interface_segregation_principle
and is the kind of thing described in a recent blog here:
http://code.joejag.com/2016/anti-if-the-missing-patterns.html
"Any time you see this you actually have two methods bundled into one.
That boolean represents an opportunity to name a concept in your code."
The makefile is only used when called by the cmMessageCommand, so inline
the use of it there. It otherwise creates an undesirable dependency on
cmMakefile for issuing messages in the cmake instance, a violation of
the Interface Segregation Principle.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interface_segregation_principle
This also makes it more explicit that the variable definitions only
affect the message() command. If an AUTHOR_WARNING is issued for any
other reason, it is not affected. To affect that, it is necessary to
set the cache variable instead of the regular variable.
This is an unfortunate interface quirk, but one which can't be fixed
easily now.
Run the `Utilities/Scripts/clang-format.bash` script to update
all our C++ code to a new style defined by `.clang-format`.
Use `clang-format` version 3.8.
* If you reached this commit for a line in `git blame`, re-run the blame
operation starting at the parent of this commit to see older history
for the content.
* See the parent commit for instructions to rebase a change across this
style transition commit.
Sort include directives within each block (separated by a blank line) in
lexicographic order (except to prioritize `sys/types.h` first). First
run `clang-format` with the config file:
---
SortIncludes: false
...
Commit the result temporarily. Then run `clang-format` again with:
---
SortIncludes: true
IncludeCategories:
- Regex: 'sys/types.h'
Priority: -1
...
Commit the result temporarily. Start a new branch and cherry-pick the
second commit. Manually resolve conflicts to preserve indentation of
re-ordered includes. This cleans up the include ordering without
changing any other style.
Use the following command to run `clang-format`:
$ git ls-files -z -- \
'*.c' '*.cc' '*.cpp' '*.cxx' '*.h' '*.hh' '*.hpp' '*.hxx' |
egrep -z -v '(Lexer|Parser|ParserHelper)\.' |
egrep -z -v '^Source/cm_sha2' |
egrep -z -v '^Source/(kwsys|CursesDialog/form)/' |
egrep -z -v '^Utilities/(KW|cm).*/' |
egrep -z -v '^Tests/Module/GenerateExportHeader' |
egrep -z -v '^Tests/RunCMake/CommandLine/cmake_depends/test_UTF-16LE.h' |
xargs -0 clang-format -i
This selects source files that do not come from a third-party.

All callers now pass a full backtrace so we do not need the alternative
that takes a cmListFileContext directly. Drop this overload to remove
the code duplication.
Expand the -W set of cmake options to include support for the -Werror
and -Wno-error format, which is used to control upgrading and
downgrading warning and error messages. Implement support for these new
formats for the dev and deprecated message types.
Add tests and updated documentation for new options.
Remove the duplicate code in cmake::Configure to set the cache variables
for the warning message suppression. Replace it with calls to the
dedicated methods to carry this out.
Create a new dialog window for the cmake-gui that provides controls for
setting the state of suppression of developer and deprecated warning
messages. This replaces the previous single checkbox for setting the
state of suppression of developer warnings.
Added a note for the new functionality to the release notes.
Explicitly enable deprecated warnings by default, via the
cmake::GetSuppressDeprecatedWarnings method, which signals
suppression is turned off unless the CMake variables are set
as required.
Add tests and update the documentation for the new
functionality.
Add 'deprecated' warning options type, to allow setting
CMAKE_WARN_DEPRECATED via the -W '-Wdeprecated' and
'-Wno-deprecated' options.
Add tests for new options and updated documentation.
Refactor the -Wdev and -Wno-dev options parser to use a generic -W
parser that follows the GCC pattern, excluding support for
-Werror=TYPE and -Wno-error=TYPE formats for now.
Explicitly enable author warnings by default, via the
cmake::GetSuppressDevWarnings method, which signals suppression
is turned off unless the CMake variables are set as required.
Add test cases for author and deprecated messages displayed by
default.
Make the message suppression more consistent, by adding a check
for the message related CMake variables in cmake::IssueMessage,
which allows callers of IssueMessage other than the message
command to behave as expected. Also added a check for
CMAKE_SUPPRESS_DEVELOPER_WARNINGS in the message command to
mirror the deprecated message type behaviour.
Added a 'force' flag to the cmake::IssueMessage method, to
make the message suppression consistent, when setting the
message related CMake variables directly in a CMake file.
Expand message command tests to cover the AUTHOR_WARNING message
type as well.
The -T parameter to CMake may now be specified through cmake-gui via a
new text field in the first-time configure wizard (below the generator
chooser).
The generator factories specify whether or not they support toolsets.
This information is propagated to the Qt code and used to determine if
the selected generator should also display the optional Toolset widgets.
The changes in commit c96fe0b4 (cmake: Add -W options to control
deprecation warnings and errors, 2015-07-28) fail to account for
-Wdev warnings produced by places in CMake other than message().
This causes a regression in which -Wno-dev fails to suppress such
warnings. Revert the feature until it can be revised accordingly.
heaptrack showed a 1 byte allocation with the backtrace pointing
here, as is the case since commit v3.3.0-rc1~112^2~5 (cmPolicies:
Remove unused cmPolicy class., 2015-05-03)
Refactor the -Wdev and -Wno-dev to use a generic -W parser that follows
the GCC pattern. Include support for setting CMAKE_ERROR_DEPRECATED and
CMAKE_WARN_DEPRECATED via the deprecated warning. Add -Werror=dev and
-Wno-error=dev options so that dev warning options are in line with
deprecated warning options. Use a new CMAKE_SUPPRESS_DEVELOPER_ERRORS
internal cache entry to store the above new dev options persistently.
Add tests for new options and updated cmake documentation and release
notes to list new options.
The --trace option is helpful, but sometimes, what you're looking for is
deep under many layers of function calls and figuring out what instance
of the function call you're looking at is tedious to determine (usually
involving patching and message()). Instead, add a --trace-expand option
to trace while expanding commands into what CMake actually sees.
Don't create a snapshot in Initialize(), but leave the creation
responsibility to the cmake instance instead. Previously, the
cmState would Initialize() in its constructor, and the cmake instance
would re-Initialize() during Configure(). The end result was the
same and there would be one snapshot present. However, cmLocalGenerator
also created a snapshot on construction, and that one was used, leaving
the first snapshot unused, and potential for off-by-one errors.
Fix that by making the cmLocalGenerator use the existing snapshot
if it is top-level. Add a CurrentSnapshot to the cmake instance and
populated it while configuring a directory. This will eventually
replace the 'current local generator' concept. Fix the GetParent
implementation to be able to return the first snapshot.
Always show the option with its argument separate in summary text.
State in the main documentation that the option and its argument can be
given together too.
They are maintained as containing the same content as the 'home'
directories, but they are never read from.
Fix some comments and help strings which confused the two by
name. They actually mean what is called CMAKE_SOURCE_DIR in
cmake code.
Global properties are already global in scope, so remove the
overload for specifying it and port users of the API.
The call from cmMakefile::GetProperty can be simplified because
the scope is only used during chaining, and there is no further
chaining after processing global properties.
At this point, it is an interface to the cache. It will be extended
to be a universal interface for access to and manipulation of
configuration-time data (defintions, properties on targets,
directories, source files etc).
This will allow porting all command implementations away
from the cmMakefile and cmTarget classes, and result in something
more-purely related to configuration-time processing of cmake
commands. That should serve at least the following goals:
* Split the CMake implementation more definitively into three
stages: Configuration, computation and generation, and be able to
implement each optimally for memory access patterns etc.
* Make better IDE integration possible by making more configuration
data available.
* Make it possiblte to use a smaller library than CMakeLib.a in
cpack and ctest, resulting in smaller executables.
* Make it possible to run the configure step multiple times in
the same CMake run (#14539).

to cmMakefile.

This topic was never tested without some follow-up commits. The
GetCacheEntryValue API returns a pointer to memory freed on return.
It will have to be revised along with the rest of the original topic.
Define the 'cmake -A' option to set CMAKE_GENERATOR_PLATFORM
without having to spell out the whole variable name. We choose
the name '-A' for "platform" because '-P' is already taken, and
in the common use case the "platform" is actually an architecture
(e.g. x64).
Teach the RunCMake test infrastructure to use -A to pass the generator
platform. Extend the RunCMake.GeneratorPlatform test with a case to
verify that the -A option cannot be repeated.
Reject the option by default. It will be implemented on a per-generator
basis. Pass the setting into try_compile project generation. Add cache
entry CMAKE_GENERATOR_PLATFORM and associated variable documentation to
hold the value persistently.
Add a RunCMake.GeneratorPlatform test to cover basic use cases for the
option. Verify that CMAKE_GENERATOR_PLATFORM is empty by default, and
that it is rejected when the generator does not support a user setting.
Teach set_property and get_property an "INSTALL" property type to be
associated with install-tree file paths. Make the properties available
to CPack for use during packaging. Add a "prop_inst" Sphinx domain
object type for documentation of such properties.
Add properties and variables corresponding to CXX equivalents.
Add features for c_function_prototypes (C90), c_restrict (C99),
c_variadic_macros (C99) and c_static_assert (C11). This feature
set can be extended later.
Add a <PREFIX>_RESTRICT symbol define to WriteCompilerDetectionHeader
to conditionally represent the c_restrict feature.
Casts from std::string -> cmStdString were high on the list of things
taking up time. Avoid such implicit casts across function calls by just
using std::string everywhere.
The comment that the symbol name is too long is no longer relevant since
modern debuggers alias the templates anyways and the size is a
non-issue since the underlying methods are generated since it's
inherited.
Refactor edit_cache tool selection to ask each global generator for its
preference. Teach the Ninja generator to always use cmake-gui because
Ninja by design cannot run interactive terminal dialogs like ccmake.
Teach the Makefile generator to use cmake-gui when also using an "extra"
generator whose IDE has no terminal to run ccmake, and otherwise fall
back to CMAKE_EDIT_COMMAND selection for normal Makefile build systems.
Rename cmSystemTools::FindExecutableDirectory to FindCMakeResources.
Teach it to compute the locations of cmake, ctest, cpack, ccmake, and
cmake-gui executables, and the location of CMAKE_ROOT. Provide this
information from static cmSystemTools::Get<resource>() methods.
Refactor code that needs these locations to use the new APIs.
Teach FindCMakeResources to use the OS X system API to lookup the
executable location. When running from the CMake build tree itself,
leave a file in the tree that FindCMakeResources can use to read the
location of the source tree. This avoids the need to compile the source
tree location into a binary that may be installed and used without the
source tree.
Teach the QtDialog on OS X to create a "cmake-gui" symlink in the build
tree next to "cmake" and the other tools, as is already done in the
install tree for the application bundle. This ensures a consistent set
of executables are available in one directory.
Enable the --use-stderr behavior by default and ignore the old option.
Passing through the pipes allows color terminal output and other things
to work as if one ran the native build command directly.
Drop all DefineProperty calls for non-chained properties. Drop the
documentation from the chained ones. The documentation for all
properties is now in Help/prop_*/*.rst files.
We will no longer support full documentation generation from executables
and will instead generate documentation with other tools. Disable (with
a warning left behind) the command-line options:
--copyright
--help-compatcommands
--help-full
--help-html
--help-man
Drop supporting code. Drop manual sections generation from executables.
Remove internal documentation construction APIs. Drop unused sections
See Also, Author, Copyright, Compat Commands, Custom Modules.
With our modern development workflow it is less likely a property will
be added to C++ code without documentation. This mode only existed to
support the DocTest which had very limited coverage of the properties
anyway.
By default, the message is not issued. If CMAKE_ERROR_DEPRECATED
is on, the message is fatal. If CMAKE_WARN_DEPRECATED is on, the
message is a warning.
Move the cmake::ExecuteCMakeCommand static method and all the static
methods it calls out of the 'cmake' class to a separate 'cmcmd' class.
Build the latter as part of the main cmake executable with cmakemain.cxx
and not in CMakeLib. Drop unused header includes from "cmake.cxx".
By moving this implementation out of cmake.cxx we avoid carrying it
around in all the executables that use class 'cmake'. It is needed only
for the main "cmake -E" functionality.
Implement generator toolset selection (cmake -T) for VS >= 10 by setting
the PlatformToolset. Extend the RunCMake.GeneratorToolset test case to
verify CMAKE_GENERATOR_TOOLSET when the generator supports -T.
Since commit 485a940e (VS: Simplify MSVC version reporting, 2012-08-23)
all MSVC version information is detected during the compiler id step
from the actual compiler invoked by generated build systems rather than
hard-coded in VS generators. Therefore we can set the PlatformToolset
in VS >= 10 project files and support toolsets from other VS versions.
Reject the option by default. It will be implemented on a per-generator
basis. Pass the setting into try_compile project generation. Add cache
entry CMAKE_GENERATOR_TOOLSET and associated variable documentation to
hold the value persistently.
Add a RunCMake.GeneratorToolset test to cover basic "-T" option cases.
Verify that CMAKE_GENERATOR_TOOLSET is empty without -T, that -T is
rejected when the generator doesn't support it, and that two -T options
are always rejected.
Pass the name of the requested generator to the generator factory,
which is now responsible to check if it can create a matching
generator for the name. This allows us to add more logic to the
factory in a next step, so that not every possible generator needs
to get registered explicit in cmake::AddDefaultGenerators().
This reverts commit 5598d9b2a0.
Since commit f1670ab1 (Ninja: don't confuse ninja's rsp files with
nmake's, 2012-09-26) Ninja generator response files are placed in
CMakeFiles/ so the previously existing check already avoids expanding
them.
The approach taken by commit 8704525f (Reject directory names containing
'=', 2011-01-14) was perhaps too heavy-handed for avoiding the obscure
cases when '=' in the path fails due to limitations of Make syntax.
Only two CMake tests:
LinkDirectory
OutOfSource
fail when the path contains '=' and they cover obscure cases. Instead
of rejecting such paths outright just warn when the problem may occur.
